Howell Nature Center is a Livingston County nonprofit that provides wildlife rehabilitation, environmental education and outdoor learning opportunities from its 230-acre campus in Howell. Its programs connect people with Michigan’s native wildlife while also caring for injured, orphaned and displaced wild animals.
The organization operates a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic that receives thousands of wild animals each year. Staff and volunteers provide medical care, feeding, rehabilitation and species-appropriate support with the goal of returning animals to the wild whenever possible. The Nature Center also maintains a Wildlife Helpline to help community members determine what to do when they find an animal that may need assistance.
Some animals cannot safely be released because of permanent injuries, behavioral concerns or other limitations. These animals may become permanent residents and wildlife ambassadors at Wild Wonders Wildlife Park, where visitors can learn about native Michigan species, their habitats and the challenges they face in the wild. The park includes approximately 70 permanent animals and serves as Livingston County’s only teaching zoo.
Education is a major part of Howell Nature Center’s work. The organization offers wildlife programs, guided experiences, school and scout programming, public events and off-site presentations for groups throughout the community. These programs focus on Michigan wildlife, conservation, animal adaptations and responsible interaction with the natural world.
Community support helps sustain both the rehabilitation and education programs. Volunteers assist with wildlife care, fostering, property needs and other responsibilities, while donations help provide food, medical treatment, habitat maintenance and care for both rehabilitation patients and permanent wildlife ambassadors.
