Brighton Area Historical Society

Brighton Area Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, researching and sharing the history of Brighton and the surrounding communities of Livingston County. The organization maintains local historical records, artifacts and educational resources while creating opportunities for residents to learn more about the people, places and events that shaped the area.

The Society operates the historic Lyon School, an 1885 one-room schoolhouse in Brighton Township that has been fully restored and now serves as the organization’s headquarters. The building is also used as an educational resource, including a classroom experience designed to help students understand what school life was like in rural Michigan during the early twentieth century.

Brighton Area Historical Society also maintains exhibit space at the City of Brighton Arts, Culture and History Center in downtown Brighton. Rotating exhibits, presentations and special events give visitors opportunities to explore different aspects of local history, while the organization’s archives support research into Livingston County history and family genealogy.

Historic preservation is another important part of the Society’s work. Its projects have included the preservation of local buildings, cemeteries, headstones and other historic resources that help document the community’s past. Volunteers contribute to research, archiving, exhibits, restoration work, events and the ongoing care of the Lyon School and other historical resources.

Community members can support Brighton Area Historical Society through membership, donations, sponsorships and volunteer involvement. These contributions help fund preservation projects, educational programs, exhibits, scholarships and other efforts that keep Brighton-area history accessible for future generations.
