Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue

Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue is a volunteer-run nonprofit that rescues, retrains and rehomes Border Collies in need throughout the Great Lakes region. The organization works to give dogs coming into its care the time, training and support needed to prepare for successful placement in appropriate permanent homes.

Dogs in the rescue live in private foster homes rather than a traditional shelter setting. This allows volunteers to evaluate each dog’s temperament, activity level, behavior and compatibility with people and other animals in a home environment. Because Border Collies can vary widely in energy level and working drive, the organization places a strong emphasis on matching each dog with a home suited to its individual needs.

Before adoption, dogs in the rescue receive veterinary care that includes vaccinations, spaying or neutering and heartworm testing. Foster volunteers also work with dogs on training, routine and behavior while helping the rescue better understand the type of household where each dog is most likely to succeed.

Education is also an important part of Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue’s work. The organization provides information about breed-specific care, responsible pet guardianship and training to help current and prospective Border Collie owners understand the needs of the breed. Adoptive families can also receive ongoing advice and support after placement.

Community members can support the rescue through donations, fostering and other volunteer roles. Volunteers assist with foster care, applicant interviews, reference checks, transportation, events and other work that helps dogs move safely from rescue into permanent homes.
