Horses’ Haven is a Howell-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, retraining and rehoming at-risk equines, including horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Founded in 1995, the organization accepts animals surrendered by owners who can no longer care for them and also assists law enforcement agencies with equines in need.
Animals arriving at Horses’ Haven receive individualized care based on their medical, behavioral and training needs. Through veterinary care, rehabilitation and ongoing training, the organization works to help each equine become healthy, manageable and prepared for an appropriate permanent home. Horses’ Haven cares for both rideable and non-rideable companion animals and works to place each one through its adoption program.
Volunteers play a major role in the organization’s day-to-day operations. More than 130 volunteers help provide feeding, turnout, medications, grooming and routine barn care through morning and afternoon shifts every day of the year. Volunteers also assist with property maintenance, fencing, lawn care and other needs that support the operation of the farm. Horses’ Haven reports that its volunteers contribute an average of approximately 30,000 hours each year.
In addition to providing direct care for equines, Horses’ Haven gives community members opportunities to learn more about responsible horse care and participate directly in supporting the animals. Through adoption, volunteering, donations and other forms of involvement, supporters help the organization continue providing care for equines while working toward permanent homes for the animals it serves.
